Council Projects

The
Internet Exploitation Project was developed as a response to the
increasingly prevalent incidents of online sexual abuse of youth. A PowerPoint
presentation was created and piloted in London high school to teen leaders. This
peer-delivered project encompasses luring, the production and distribution of
child pornography, and cyber-bullying. It encourages youth to think critically
about the real life dynamics of online relationships, cybersex, sexting and
sharing intimate photos among other things. The program also encourages dialogue
among youth in order to reduce their risk of becoming victimized as a result of
their online behaviour.

The Caring Community Collection
is a multimedia collection housed in the
London Public Library that provides a
central resource to victims, survivors, family members and service providers.
The wide array of educational resources on the topic of child maltreatment,
childhood trauma, survivor issues and material on how to support victims and
survivors is housed in a venue that is welcoming and easily accessible. This
specialized collection includes storybooks, novels, references material,
professional material and videotapes. The goal is to provide a comprehensive,
accessible collection in order to lower the barriers that may exist for
exploring the problem and ultimately educating the public about these issues.
It is through these educative processes that the prevention effects are
realized.

The Neutral Zone is an
initiative to create a suitable and soothing environment for vulnerable
witnesses waiting to testify at the London Court House. Currently the space
allocated for these witnesses is poorly furnished and not responsive to the
emotional state of the witness. It lacks adequate furnishings, play equipment,
refreshment area, or the audio-video equipment necessary for the witness to
review his or her statement. The goal for the space is a safe, interesting and
neutral place for children to go while they await their involvement in criminal
court as a witness. The space will also house the closed circuit testimony
room.
